St. Joseph’s Food Pantry

This week’s #featurefriday is focused on St. Joseph’s Food Pantry in Cheyenne. The Food Pantry began over thirty years ago as a commitment to assist those experiencing a shortage of food. The pantry currently serves over 800 families per month with 2,000 bags of food.
Did you know…
There are approximately 795 million people worldwide who face hunger. Here in the US, 1 in 8 people…yes you read that right 1 IN 8 PEOPLE go hungry. This is why Food Banks and Pantries are so important. They help to provide not only food but HEALTHY food, as well as personal hygiene items and more to those in need. Through Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies, St. Joseph’s Food Pantry receives fresh pallets (from the USDA) of non-perishable food items, including fresh meat, fresh product, and fruit. The Food Pantry also has guidelines to follow with what can be donated and pays close attention to expiration dates. Our community and St. Joseph’s Food Pantry purchase fresh non-perishable food items and additional produce and fruit as needed!
How can we get involved?
Right now is a great time to get involved. With the holidays coming up and the cold weather upon us, it is so important to help our community! Right now St. Joseph’s Food Pantry is preparing 450 boxes for unemployed/low-income families, seniors, veterans, retirees, & those living in campers. They are needing Thanksgiving food items such as:
- Marshmallows
- Dinner rolls
- Turkeys (small, medium, large)
- Green beans
- Macaroni & cheese
Other non-perishables are of course always appreciated and they can always use things like sugar, brown sugar, flour, coffee, and cooking oil.
Virtual Tour.
St. Joes has created a virtual tour of its Food Pantry. Take a look inside and see what it’s all about.
How to volunteer.
Currently with COVID-19 St. Joseph’s is not taking any new volunteers, but since the pandemic, they have doubled the number of community members they are serving. The food pantry has a total of 100 volunteers that are currently working 2-hour shifts, and volunteer drivers who pick up food from stores in our community like Walmart, Loaf N Jug, Bimbos Bread, Natural Grocers, and more to help fill the demand.
Food Bank of the Rockies.
Did you know that St. Joseph’s Food Pantry is a member of the Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies and is also a distribution site for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program for Seniors (60+). The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) is a USDA program designed to improve the health of low-income people at least 60 years of age, by supplementing their diets with nutritious foods. These boxes are distributed on the 3rd Friday of the month, with the exception being the month of November. For November the boxes will be distributed on November 13th, between 10 am and Noon, at the Pantry located at 206 Van Lennon. This is an amazing program that ensures no senior goes hungry!
Eligible seniors receive a monthly food box consisting of a variety of non-perishable protein, juice, cereal, canned or dried fruits and vegetables, refrigerated cheese, nutrition education, and recipes are also included in the food boxes.
