Managing Your Mental Health At Home

Nov 16, 2022

Mental health matters!

Managing your mental health should be part of your overall health and wellness routine. In the same way you take care of your body through good eating habits and exercise, you can also take care of your mental health. Activity, purpose, and moving forward are all important to your mental health. If you are chronically bored, consider trying a hobby, especially one that gives you socialization and being around other people. If you have a change in your life, such as retirement, find new purpose in your life. Find goals and things to do that are meaningful to you. But remember, relaxation and down time is also an important part of your mental health. Try your best to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Your brain needs ample time to shut down and reset. Try relaxing activities before bed instead of scrolling through your phone or watching TV.

Make time for yourself a priorty. Family, work and life can be very demanding. Sometimes we don’t recognize when we need a break until things escalate. Even just a ten minute walk and taking deep breaths in a quite place can help calm and center you again.

Remember to breathe. Sometimes when we are going through emails, texts, or social media our breaths became shallow and that impacts our health. Take breath breaks and focus on deep breaths in and out of your nose. You can also try using a guided medication app on your phone if you have trouble getting yourself to a relaxed space.

Don’t be afraid to talk about mental health. Mental health is physical health and the more we talk about it, the less scary it becomes.
